How Beauty Trends Have Evolved

Next month is Women’s History Month. As my own #GirlBoss - I am all about empowering women to do the damn thing. There are SO many amazing women who have paved the way for us, who I look up to, and who I can always count on! And guess what? They do it all while wearing heels and a full face of makeup!

On that note - I thought it would be fun to take a peek at history to see some of the iconic beauty trends that have shaped women’s makeup and skincare {and see how they’ve changed through the years}.

Eyebrows

Ok - you don’t have to open a history book to know that eyebrows have had a BIG evolution over the years. In the 1930s, celebrities set the trends for a lot of women {that part hasn’t changed much}. At the time they were rocking extremely thin, pencil-drawn eyebrows. They were typically tapered with a drawn-in, exaggerated arch. In the silent films {popular back then}, these dramatic brows helped exaggerate the facial expressions and emotions of the actresses. It was common in the 30s for women to shave their eyebrows completely and choose to have a thin pencil line drawn on. {What were they thinking?!}

In 2023, women are favoring a more full and fluffy brow look - and I am HERE for it. Overall, brows are being grown longer, so they can be brushed up in a fluffy look that accentuates the fullness of the brows. Women are also opting to let their natural brows shine: brow lamination has become more popular as women try to accentuate their natural hair and show off their thicker brows.

If you’re unfamiliar, brown lamination is a perm for your browns. The brown service gives eyebrows a set shape, usually brushed up, that lasts for about 6 weeks {check out the image below for an after shot}. & yes - Gameela Skin offers brow lamination services to help fluff up and accentuate your naturally beautiful brows.

At-Home Skincare

Luckily for women, an at-home face mask has always been on trend. Beauty regime suggestions from the 1950s recommend women to mask every Monday, and I can’t say I disagree with that advice! Masking at least once a week is a great way to apply some extra TLC to your skin - and have a moment to relax while the mask works its magic. Luckily for us, as times have changed, the skincare industry has found a lot of new ingredients that can combat just about any skincare concern.

As always, I recommend taking a look at different types of masks and choosing one that will work for your skin type or skin concerns. A few of my favorites are the Rhonda Allison Milk Mask for combating inflammation and the Rhonda Allison Grape Seed Mask for deep moisturizing. Gameela Skin offers an assortment of masks that will work to solve just about any skincare concern, and of course, I can always help you find what will work best for you.

What is new in the world of at-home skincare? Skincare tools to help take your at-home masking to a new level. Women can now take spa-level luxury service home with them using tools like the custom mask applicator brush. A mask brush applicator is a more hygienic approach to masking. It leaves less room for contamination, saves more product, and applies product more evenly, giving you better results.

Lip Care

In the 1940s and 50s, overlining your lips to make them look plump and filling them in with ruby-red lipstick was ALL the rage. Women were entering the workforce a bit more during these decades and needed something more practical and long-lasting. Red lips gave them the freedom to express their femininity, while also offering a long-lasting look. Overlining lips was popular in an effort to make lips look more plump and symmetrical, much like famous movie stars at the time.

Today, women are beginning to favor a more natural look, especially when it comes to lip care. Lip care is a form of skincare, and women are opting for lip products with multiple benefits. Lip balm with SPF has become very popular, especially as SPF has become one of the most important products on many women’s {& men’s} counters. Women are opting for more nude colors, especially ones that offer a bit of hydration with their coloring. My favorite lip product {that also offers additional benefits} is the Jane Iredale Lip Balm. This balm offers broad-spectrum SPF coverage, as well as extreme moisturization. Various waxes come together in this product to form an antioxidant-rich, protective shell on your lips. Bonus points? It provides a natural color & lasting scent for your lips.
