Summertime Skincare Tips
The first day of summer is June 20th - just right around the corner. However, for those of us in Arizona we are well into the high 90 (maybe 100 degree) temperatures already.
Although we might picture our summer skin to be bronzed, glowing, and smooth - it might appear more sweaty, sunburned, and showing signs of aging (sorry - the truth can be hard to hear). With the constant sun exposure and high temperatures, summertime can be a trying time for your skin, but don’t panic! We’re sharing a few tips to hold on to that healthy and radiant skin of yours.
Lighten Up Your Skincare
As your skin can fluctuate from Winter to Spring to Summer - you should consider fluctuating your products to meet your skin’s needs. Similar to your skin being dry in the wintertime from the cold weather, we tend to be more oily in the summer months from the heat and humidity.
To counteract these changes in your skin, we recommend changing out some of the heavier products in your medicine cabinet. We typically recommend an alternate face cleanser and moisturizer that will help draw out the excess oils from your skin and let your pores breathe a bit easier in the hotter weather. Some of our clients will rotate their summer and winter products every other day, as they find it helps balance their skincare needs (especially those with combination skin types). Don’t Stop Moisturizing
This one is short and sweet.
Just because your skin might be looking a bit shinier these days from the excess sweat and oil, doesn’t mean you should stop applying your moisturizer. Moisturizer actually helps reestablish the outermost layer of the skin, which does the majority of the work from protecting your skin against harmful, every day pollutants.
We recommend applying your summertime lightweight moisturizer both morning and evening to keep that outermost layer of the skin healthy!
Add Vitamin C Serum To Your Skincare Routine
In the summer months, our skin tends to get more exposure to direct sunlight. As we all know, sunlight can cause sunburn, dark spots, aging, fine lines, and more. This is why you should always be wearing your SPF.
To combat these summer side effects, we recommend adding in a vitamin C serum to your daily skincare routine. This serum is great year round, but it’s even more important in the summertime. It can help fight the hyperpigmentation we see from sun damage, as well as improve the appearance of fine lines.
We recommend adding just a few drops of this serum into your routine after cleansing your face, but before applying your moisturizer. Need a recommendation for what serum is best for your skin? Our esthetician can help!
Protect Your Skin
This goes without saying, but protect your skin at all costs. This includes layering on your SPF throughout the day. Just because you add a layer in the morning or before you hit the pool - doesn’t mean it remains on your skin all day. We recommend applying your SPF every few hours even if you feel like it hasn’t worn off.
We also recommend wearing a hat and doing your best to stay in the shade. Bronzed, oiled up skin, is so a thing of the 80’s! Clear, natural, and non-sun damaged skin is where it’s at!
Nowadays they make some pretty cute sun hats (or even baseball caps) that basically complete your summer look. Looking for an SPF recommendation? We love Daytime Defense by Rhonda Allison.
Get a Facial
Summer is not the time to skip out on skincare. When you’ve spent an excess amount of time in the sun, the outermost layer of the skin will naturally start to thicken. This can cause clogged pores and breakouts - YUCK!
To combat this, we recommend scheduling a regular facial during the summer months. During your facial, your esthetician will exfoliate the skin to rid your face of dead skin cells, and perform extractions allowing your skin to breathe. Not to mention, your skin will also soak in some much needed TLC (hello vitamins and serums).
Whether it’s after your summer vacation, or even after a few trips to the pool, a facial will be so helpful in maintaining healthy looking skin.
