Skincare Routine for Men
Where are our men at?! Earlier this month we wrote a blog post talking about the importance of skincare for men… however we didn’t get into much detail about choosing the right products. Establishing a skincare routine at home with the right products can be intimidating. We all get served ads left and right for the “best” cleanser for clear skin. Even walking up and down the aisles at Target can be overwhelming.
SO we thought we’d start with a few tips, brands, and recommendations on where to start with your skincare regime.
Identify Your Skin Type
First and foremost, there is no one size fits all when it comes to skincare. Everyone’s skin is unique and has different areas of concern. It’s important to first identify these concerns and what your skin type is.
Skin type refers to what your skin’s natural disposition is - without the help of any outside products. The most common skin types are normal, oily, dry, or a combination. When someone has dry skin, they often have smaller pores and their skin might feel tighter throughout the day. For those who have more oily skin - it sounds just like it is. They might have larger pores and tend to build up more oil (or shiny areas) on their face during the day. For those who are blessed with a normal skin type, they don’t get over oily or experience tightening of the skin.
Starting a Skincare Routine
After you identify your skin type, you will be able to select the appropriate products to address your concerns. To do so, we recommend consulting our esthetician as she can help you hand select the products that will best fit your needs. We always direct our clients towards Rhonda Allison’s Skincare line, as they have a great selection for men and women with all different skin types.
A complete skincare routine includes a few different steps:
Cleanser
Toner
Serum
Moisturizer
Step One: Cleanse your Face
We don’t care if you already have clear skin - wash your face (and not with that body wash you have in the shower)! Cleansing your face in both the AM and PM is important as it removes toxins, oils, and bacteria from your skin. Whether it be from touching your face, sweating, applying SPF. etc. - your skin collects so much bacteria.
Washing your face should take no more than 5 minutes! All you’ve gotta do is wet your face with warm water, add a nickel-size amount of cleanser onto your (clean) fingertips, and lather it up on your face. For those with facial hair, we recommend spending an extra 15-30 seconds really working the product into your skin. Follow it up by rinsing your face with warm water and BOOM, you’re done. Don’t forget to WASH your hands prior to washing your face.
We recommend using Rhonda Allison’s Blue Agave cleanser for men! It’s great for all skin types and awakens the skin with a deep pore cleanse.
Step Two: Toner
Toner can be an easy step to skin, especially for men! However, toner can actually be most helpful for men - especially if you experience acne or ingrown hairs from shaving. We recommend applying your toner onto a cotton ball and then applying it all over your face after cleansing.
For those with more acne or ingrown hairs, it’s best to choose a toner that contains salicylic acid to help reduce the inflammation. Our esthetician can help select a toner that’s right for your skin type. Rhonda Allison also carries a toner made for men, Stone Power. Stone Power is made to strengthen the skin and is best applied after shaving.
Step Three: Serum
This may or may not be our favorite step for skincare! A serum is typically a gel like product that contains a high concentration of ingredients your skin will love. Your esthetician will help you select a serum that addresses your skin concerns (pigmentation, breakouts, dryness, aging, etc.). Serums can be applied similar to a face lotion - just put 2-3 pumps onto your fingertips, and then rub all over your face.
For recommendations, we recommend contacting our esthetician at Gameela Skin!
Step Four: Moisturizer
We recommend selecting two separate moisturizers - one for the AM and another for the PM. For daytime, it’s best to have a light moisturizer that contains SPF to protect your skin from sun damage.
For nighttime, finish off your skincare routine with a lotion that's rich with ingredients made for your skin type, yet not too thick to clog your pores.
Similar to the other products, put 2-3 pumps of lotion onto clean fingertips and rub onto your face until it's 100% absorbed into your skin.
For recommendations on choosing the right moisturizer, we recommend contacting our esthetician at Gameela Skin!
After you apply your moisturizer, you’ve wrapped up your daily skincare routine!
For those who are interested in selecting higher grade shaving products to go along with your skincare routine, Rhonda Allison carries a complete shave kit - REDMethod shaving products. For questions about the products or to order them, please contact our esthetician.
