Top 3 Things a Lash Artist Should Do Regularly

I’m checking in with our fellow lash artists today! It seems like there are more and more people going through cosmetology school and getting their aesthetician license to offer lash lift treatments {& many other} beauty services. The competition among aestheticians is greater than ever, which means YOU need to set yourself apart from the others. I’ve been in the industry for 15+ years {hi - it’s me, Nancy} and have learned a thing or two that have contributed to my success in the industry. Small details that tend to get overlooked by others DO make a difference for you and your clients. I’m sharing my top 3 “must-do’s” as a lash artist that will have you and your clients feeling confident in your expertise and services.

Keep Your Workspace Clean

While it may seem obvious to provide a clean and sanitary space {and experience} for your clients, you’d be surprised by some of the horror stories and negative experiences I’ve heard from others. Estheticians are busy all day long. I don’t know about you, but I have clients coming in one after another with little time in between, and it can be difficult to accomplish any heavy cleaning in between. Prepping ahead of time and keeping up with your chores at the beginning and end of each day, will help keep your overall space tidy and minimize your stress.

At Gameela Skin we check a few things off at the beginning and end of each work day:

  • Laundry! I am constantly cleaning my towels and sheets. This assures that I always have a clean set to grab in between client appointments so that I can toss any items that have been used in the laundry hamper. Try to avoid your clients walking into any dirty laundry as it may hinder their experience.

  • Sanitize any and all tools you may use. Not only do I have several sets of tools available to use for each client appointment, but after each treatment, my tools are washed and properly sanitized.

  • Keep your salon space clean in general. Vacuum the floors, clean the counters, put away clutter, etc. You want your salon to be a space that your clients actually want to be in. I go as far as providing a space for clients’ belongings so they feel welcome. Bonus points for burning a scented candle and turning on some music to set the vibe.

Keep Your Products Updated

Again, this might seem obvious - but you would be surprised.😉 While most of your skin and beauty products might be used daily for client treatments, some products sit on the shelf for longer periods than others. I recommend reviewing your service products at least once per month {maybe even once per week} for the following:

  • Check expiration dates! Even if the product may look good, if it’s past the date of use, toss it in the trash!

  • Perform a quality check assessment for your products. If the product doesn’t look good, you probably shouldn’t be using it on someone else. Toss it.

Lash lifts and lash tints are a treatment that provides very obvious results. While you don’t ever want to use bad or expired products, the last thing you want to do is jeopardize the health {and look} of a client’s eyelashes. It’s in your best interest to keep your products up to date!

3 things a lash artist should do

Client Communication

Whether you are treating a first-time client or someone who has been a long-time client, over-communicate with them. While it may seem overkill, I promise you would rather ask too many questions, than make mistake. There are a few reasons why I recommend this:

  • Always confirm the service treatment your client is coming in for. Double-check that the client scheduled a lash lift treatment. Confirm whether or not they will be adding a lash tint or any other services to their treatment.

  • Client expectations! This is big for first-time clients. It’s best to set expectations of how the service treatment will go and the results they will get. Without this info, your client might have false expectations.

  • Does your client need to follow before and after care instructions for their eyelashes? Make sure to communicate this with them. This will help your clients understand that in order to gain the highest quality results, there are steps they will need to follow at home.
