Everything You Need To Know About Dermaplaning
Earlier this month we talked about transitioning your skincare routine from Winter to Spring. Included in the list of steps we provided to prep your skin for warmer weather was starting with a “clean slate”. Dermaplaning exfoliates the skin and removes any dead and damaged skin cells, which helps you achieve fresh and clean skin.
There are a number of other skin benefits you gain from dermaplaning! We’re tackling some of our favorites as well as common questions we get from our clients about the exfoliation service.
Benefits of Dermaplaning
There’s a reason dermaplaning is one of our favorite skincare services - it has so many benefits!
Dermaplaning removes peach fuzz! It’s a great alternative to both waxing and laser treatments and will leave your skin looking brighter and smoother than ever!
The exfoliation will allow your skincare products to penetrate deeper into the skin! This will make your products that much more effective -- win, win!
Hello even skin tone! If done regularly over the course of a few months, dermaplaning can help improve hyperpigmentation and discoloration of the skin.
You will LOVE how your makeup looks after a dermaplane treatment. After the deep exfoliation and removal of peach fuzz, your makeup application will go on smoothly without blotches or uneven patches.
There is NO downtime following a dermaplane appointment. Since dermaplaning is not an invasive treatment and no chemicals are used, your skin does not experience any trauma. Other than slight redness in the hours following your treatment - you’ll be good to go for a night on the town.
What is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a safe exfoliating treatment done with a surgical blade by the trained professionals at Gameela Skin. The surgical blade probably sounds a bit more intimidating than it actually is - we promise the treatment is painless! During the treatment, our esthetician will use the surgical blade to “shave off” the peach fuzz and the first few layers of dry and dead skin cells.
Following the dermaplane, our esthetician will end the treatment with a combination of serums. With the fresh new exposed layer of skin, the applied products will penetrate your skin and be so much more effective which will leave your skin feeling refreshed and smooth.
Does Facial Hair Grow Back After Dermaplaning?
Does facial hair grow back after dermaplaning? And if so, does the hair grow back thicker? This is probably the most common question we get about this service. The answer: Yes, the hair grows back. No, it does not grow back thicker or darker.
It’s actually impossible for the vellus hair or “peach fuzz” that covers your entire body to be altered in any way. This hair is different from any other hair on your body (such as the coarse hair that grows on your head or under your arms).
Your facial hair will grow back slowly over the course of 3-4 weeks after your appointment. It is for this reason, we recommend scheduling a dermaplane about once per month.
Skin Types that Benefit from Dermaplaning
Just about all skin types can benefit from dermaplaning - including those who might be pregnant or nursing as there are no chemicals used during the service.
The only exception where our esthetician might not recommend dermaplaning, would be if you are experiencing cystic acne OR have recently been prescribed Accutane. In both cases, the skin is extremely sensitive, and it would be best to hold off on dermaplaning until your skin has fully recovered.
Side Effects of Dermaplaning
As dermaplaning is a non-invasive procedure and uses no chemicals - the treatment is extremely low risk.
Possible side effects from dermaplaning might include skin redness in the hours following your treatment. Some people might also experience a light breakout.
To avoid redness or irritation, we recommend not applying makeup or heavy skincare products in the hours following your appointment.
